Our players once again voted for the Player of the Month. A record nine different players received votes in April, which clearly shows that there were few standout performances last month, but this award was given for consistency. For that reason it went to Máté Kovács, who joined us this winter. We’d like to introduce him now.
You were named Player of the Month, congratulations! Did you expect it?
Thank you so much for the recognition! I’m really happy about the award, and although I tried to give my all in every game, I didn’t expect to be the one to win it in the end.
You only joined in the winter, but you’ve already made a significant impact. How do you feel on the team?
I feel great on the team; I’ve found myself in an environment that feels completely like my own, so fitting in was easy. The vice-captain, Dani Botos, played a key role moving here, I’ve known him since college, which also helped during the initial period. I think the good team chemistry shows on the field as well.
You’ve been playing mostly as a fullback lately, though you used to play as a forward for us. Which position do you prefer?
I played fullback in the U16s, then during my U19 and senior years, I mostly played as a winger and striker, so neither role is foreign to me. I prefer to play wherever I can help the team the most, but I’d be lying if I said I don’t like setting up goals or scoring them – the closer you are to the goal, the easier it is.
You mentioned the youth system, but where and how did you start playing football?
I started playing football at age seven for the Lukácsháza team in Vas County, where I’m from.

Do you have a favorite team or player?
My favorite team is Barcelona, and as a result, my favorite player is Lionel Messi. His playing style completely captivated me when I was a kid, and it still does to this day.
What has been the most memorable football-related experience of your life?
During the 2021 European Championship, I was lucky enough to attend the Portugal–France match at Puskás Arena. It was a bit of a mixed feeling because the Hungarian national team was playing against Germany at the same time, but it remained an unforgettable experience -especially the moment the Hungarians scored in the other match! The whole stadium was roaring “Ria, Ria, Hungária!” as if we were at our own national team’s game.
Do you have any hobbies besides football?
My other hobby is making Neapolitan pizza. It’s not a typical activity for a football player, but gastronomy has always been close to my heart. Once I tasted this style of pizza, I knew that whenever it came to pizza, this was the kind I’d always want to eat. There wasn’t a place like that in our neighborhood, so I taught myself how to make it.
